let’s talk
Wrinkles
Fine lines, forehead creases, crow’s feet, frown lines, deepening folds, and expression-related folds.
What Are Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are creases that form in the skin over time. Some start as faint lines when you move your face, smiling, squinting, frowning. Others develop from sun damage, loss of elasticity, or repeated facial movements. They show up most often around the eyes, across the forehead, between the brows, and around the mouth.
Wrinkles are a very normal part of life. But if they’re making you feel out of sync with how you look versus how you feel, you’re definitely not alone. The key to treating wrinkles? Understanding what kind of wrinkles you have (yes, they’re different) and choosing the right approach for each.
The Two Wrinkle Types
There are two main types of wrinkles: dynamic and static. They form differently, behave differently, and respond to completely different treatments. Confusing one for the other is the most common reason people don’t see change in their wrinkles.
These show up when your face moves with smiling, frowning, and squinting.
- Where they appear: Forehead (horizontal lines), between brows (“11s”), outer corners of eyes (crow’s feet)
- When you see them: Only during movement. They vanish when your face relaxes
- Root cause: Muscle activity + sun damage
If left untreated, dynamic wrinkles don’t just stay as faint lines. They become etched into the skin’s structure, eventually turning into static wrinkles. That’s why early intervention matters.
These are visible even when your face is completely relaxed. You can see them in the mirror first thing in the morning, before you’ve made a single expression.
They form from three main factors: Loss of collagen and elasticity (natural aging), volume loss in the fat pads beneath the skin, and sun damage, breaking down structural support.
- Where they appear: Nasolabial folds, marionette lines, thin lips, décolletage
- When you see them: All the time, they don’t disappear at rest
- Root cause: Structural breakdown below the surface

Common Signs & Symptoms
Lines that show up when you move
Forehead creases when you raise your brows. Crow’s feet when you smile. These are dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.
Creases that stay visible at rest
Once-faint lines that now show even when your face is relaxed. This means the skin has lost elasticity and the wrinkle has become static.
Deep folds between the brows
Frown lines (or “11s”) that carve down between the eyebrows. Often, one of the first signs of aging that people want to address.
Horizontal forehead lines
From years of raising brows or reacting visibly, these can make you look tired or stern even when you’re not.
Crow’s feet at the outer corners of the eyes
Sun exposure and repetitive squinting create fan-like lines. Often appear earlier than other wrinkles.
Thinning skin around the mouth
Lipstick bleeds into fine lines. Skin looks crepey. Caused by movement, sun, and natural volume loss.
What Causes Wrinkles?
They don’t happen overnight. Wrinkles build from a mix of biology and behaviour. The main drivers we see:
- Facial muscle movement: Every time you smile, frown, or squint, your face muscles are contracting. This happening over the years creates grooves in the skin.
- Sun exposure: UV radiation breaks down collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep skin springy. Most wrinkles on the face, neck, and hands are sun-related.
- Loss of collagen and elasticity: After 30, collagen production slows. Skin becomes thinner and less able to bounce back.
- Dehydration: Dry skin exaggerates the look of fine lines, especially in winter or low-humidity environments.
- Smoking: Smoking is never good for skin. It constricts blood flow, starves skin of oxygen, and breaks down collagen faster.
- Repetitive habits: Sleeping on your side, resting your hand on your face, or wearing sunglasses that pinch can deepen certain lines over time.
How to Treat Wrinkles
Not all wrinkles respond to the same treatment, since their root causes are much different.
- For dynamic wrinkles: Getting Botox treatments is the most effective option. It works by gently relaxing the muscles underneath, so the skin above doesn’t crease as much.
- For static wrinkles: A combination approach works best. The key here is mixing Botox with treatments that improve collagen and volume, like dermal filler injections.
Tips To Prevent Wrinkles
Wrinkles will come naturally, but we can help prevent them and slow them down with these helpful tips:
- Wear SPF 30+ daily: UV rays are the #1 cause of premature wrinkling
- Use sunglasses instead of squinting: Reduces strain on the eye area
- Sleep on your back: Minimizes sleep creases on cheeks and forehead
- Stay well hydrated: Plump skin shows fewer fine lines
- Avoid smoking: It accelerates skin aging and deepens wrinkles
- Don’t overuse straws or chew gum: Repetitive mouth movements can etch lines around the lips
- Use a moisturizer with peptides or ceramides: Supports skin barrier and resilience

Wrinkles FAQ
Wrinkles can seem deeper on days when your skin is dry, tired, or puffy. Lack of sleep, dehydration, salty foods, and even a night of drinking can all make fine lines stand out more. Lighting plays a role too, harsh sunlight or overhead lights can cast shadows that make every crease look sharper than it really is.
By 30, it’s common to notice faint lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), between the brows, and across the forehead. Smile lines around the mouth might also start to show. These early signs are usually soft and only appear when you move your face, they’re more about expression than age.
Some wrinkles can soften over time, but once a line has set into the skin, it doesn’t fully disappear on its own. Skincare, hydration, and treatments can make them less noticeable, but they’re part of the skin’s natural aging process. Think of them more as a slow change in texture than a flaw.
You can’t completely erase wrinkles without professional treatments, but you can keep them softer and less visible. Staying hydrated, eating antioxidant-rich foods, wearing sunscreen, and using a good moisturizer all help your skin stay plump.
A deep wrinkle stays visible even when your face is completely relaxed. If a line is still there when you’re not smiling or frowning, it means the skin’s structure underneath has started to change, making the crease more permanent.
Sunburn itself doesn’t create permanent wrinkles overnight, but repeated burns speed up the aging process. The redness fades, but the damage builds under the surface, breaking down collagen and making fine lines show up sooner. Early burns might not leave an immediate wrinkle, but over time, the skin can lose its bounce.
